What is Community Living Toronto?

The vision of Community Living Toronto is for a society where people with an intellectual disability are welcomed and embraced as valued and contributing citizens in all aspects of community life.

Our Mission

Community Living Toronto changes the lives of people with an intellectual disability by giving them a voice and supporting their choices where they live, learn, work and play.

It's been sixty years since Community Living Toronto was founded by parents, family members and friends wanting an alternative to institutionalizing their children, family members and neighbours. What began as a grassroots association has grown into one of the largest associations supporting people with an intellectual disability in North America.

Community Living Toronto has been a leader in working toward this vision of inclusion over the past 60 years. We created opportunities for education expand from segregated schools into fully inclusive classrooms in neighbourhood schools. We advocated for the end of The Homes For Retarded Persons Act with all of its outdated limitations and degradations. We have witnessed the development of employment workshops and the continuing evolution of supported employment programs in partnership with the business community. We also lobbied for zoning by-laws to be changed so that people could live in their different communities.

With this year being the 60th anniversary of Community Living Toronto, we invite you to join us in celebrating our achievements - it promises to be the best ever. And we urge you to continue your support of Community Living Toronto's vision of inclusion for all people.
